Melanie Dunajeski, Partner in our Labor & Employment group, was recently elected to the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanities of Northwest Indiana.
Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, International. The vision of Habitat for Humanity is “a world where everyone has a decent place to live”. Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana was formed in July 1986. There are over 60 Habitat homes located in Lake County, Indiana. Building on donated land, with donated funds and constructed with volunteer labor, Habitat’s mission is to provide affordable housing opportunities to those in need.
Habitat NWI opened its first ReStore in March 2005 in Gary and now has locations in Griffith and Merrillville. A Habitat ReStore is a retail outlet recycling overstocked, discontinued, new and used building materials, appliances and gently used home furnishings donated by manufacturers, store contractors and individuals. These donated items are sold at a fraction of normal prices to the public. All revenue from sales goes to the local affiliate in support of its building program. Current projects of Habitat NWI include the “Women Build” from May through November 2018 at three residential locations and one neighborhood playground in Gary, with groups of 6-8 people volunteering each day to move these construction and rehabilitation projects forward.
